Bali Dwipa Jaya: Of Glorious Views & Food & Crap Coffee

Yeay! One of my favourite topics to blog about are my travels. And it seems like I've been on a travel sort of puasa, haven't been out of Singapore/Malaysia much, it's starting to scare me. I was desperately trying to get flights, companions etc etc at one point hehehe. Now suddenly I'm bombarded with sooo many trips it's going to overwhelm me (yep asked for it totally).

Bali Dwipa Jaya - Bali Glorious Island

Been wanting to visit Bali ever since I was a kid (exaggerate), plus parents wanted to visit Bali as well, so before I could get flight tickets, MCC contacted me and said she has better plans, knows Bali better, and then she took it from there to include Sean Ee as well... LOL. Me, I'm just happy to have someone take care of the finer details :D

Carried a bulk of rupiah with me, damn, this place truly tests your arithmetic skills! Too many zeros! Some more I was assigned as the so-called treasurer, holding on to a pooled amount of cash and paying for shared expenditures -.-

My very first time boarding KLM - so forgive my sua-ku-ness hehehe. The flight was completely full! To my horror, I was seated next to a PRC couple! Now, I have nothing against them (exaggerate), but this guy next to me had his legs opened wide till it's way over on my side, not to mention he talks loudly and  hogs the armrest!! Nightmarish.... Once, he stretched his arms out and yawned in a manner that would make a trumpeting elephant proud. Walao, like his own house leh zzz... Some more when orders for our drinks came, he ordered beer and I was darn terrified that he's gonna burp in this confined space but thank god nothing of the sort happened (touch wood). Ooo... then I balas dendam - when I crossed my legs, I purposely accidentally kicked his hairy legs muahaha who ask his dirty feet cross into my territory?!

The flight is full of angmohs woh, but I really so lucky -.-

Blah airline food.

The bunch in my flight are an enthusiastic bunch. As soon as we touched down and the captain announced our arrival, everyone broke into applause hehehe. It was already close to 9pm when I arrived, met up with MCC who was already in Bali for the past few days, and my parents + aunt whose arrival was an hour earlier.

MCC wanted to bring us to a little café near Kuta - which is pretty close to the airport but the place was packed!

And so we ended up in...

Warung Made @ Seminyak!

Nice horrrrrrr the pictures taken from my camera :D Low light shot looks liddis leh, impressive horrrr :D

Warung Made is more of a touristy sort of place - but I must say, the food is good! Our driver, Dewa tells me that Warung Made started out as a small warung in Kuta before becoming hugely popular and has since then opened two more shops.

:D

Oh, I must have forgotten to warn you that this is a photo heavy post - LOADS of food shots as well! hehehehe, don't say I didn't warn ya beforehand.

Nasi campur - which turns out to be my frequently ordered favourite in this trip! As the name suggests, the dish is made up of mixed ingredients, from the sea and from land. Pieces of brinjal, cucumber, greens, chicken, pork, tofu, otak-otak alike, ikan bilis, fish, tempe, sambal on the side... wow... that's quite a mouthful and I doubt I'd finished listing them all!

Mixed them all up iz yums!! Nom nom nom... Love the mixture of the sambal and herbs & spices!

Another of our fave and frequently ordered - Gado gado! I just love, love, love, the gado-gado in Warung Made. Peanut sauce dribbled over long beans, bean sprouts, tempe and cabbages... the simplicity of the dish.... great stuff.

Best pork satay I've had. Seriously, the pigs here must be well cared and blessed and prayed upon everyday, the pork is succulent and juicy. Yummy, yummy.

Another hit - grilled mahi-mahi served with a bed of salad and mashed taters.

Feast your eyes on these succulent pork ribs! They were oh-so-tender! One of the best ribs I've ever had! Sinful, sinful! Already very late but still stuffing ourselves hehehehhe. Ah well, this only signifies more great food to come, eh? ;)

P/s Can't help but to admire my spanking new camera's shots kekekekkeke ok I need to stop rubbing it in.

Dinner costs IDR484,400, which comes to approximately SGD65 for the 6 of us (including Dewa). Pretty value for money considering the quality, ambience and amount! (We ordered 3 Bintang beers as well, my current favourite beer hehehe, only costs SGD2-3!)

After dinner, we were whisked off to our villa in Seminyak, and let me tell you, my jaw literally dropped when I saw the place. Completely over the top!

Prepare to collect your jaws, took these the next morning:

Outside the villa

Knock, knock!

Our private lounge area, complete with kitchen, tv, stove, fridge, the works.

And our very own pool!
(Mum & Dad early morning start to qigung d, they woke me up, hence, I was already out and about by 8am on a holiday)

If you're thinking, so impressive meh, pretty normal for villas in Bali to have its own pool... you wait....

View from the stairs to the second floor...

We have four rooms, each rooms with its own bathroom attached.

So I took a whole room to myself.....

Can roll from one side to the other...

A section for wardrobe, mirror, handbags, somersault, whatever.

Toilet in an outdoor setting...

Complete with outdoor shower and bathtub! The lady's carrying the shower head by the way hehehe... It sounds like very nice and all, but to tell you the truth, it's really cold to shower out in the open like that! Especially we were always out for the whole day and back only when it's already dark so it gets rather chilly at night when I shower :S

View from the upstairs balcony... There's frangipani all over the place. They (the villa staff) even have frangipanis on our tables, toiletries set, bed, etc. Just love the exquisite fragrance :)

By the way, tell you a scaredy cat story lol. I hardly sleep on my own while traveling (for obvious reasons - splitting the cost when sharing rooms), so this is one of the rare few times that I got the whole room to myself. When I first entered the room, I was beyond excited, until I checked out the paintings on the walls....  First painting just on top of my bed depicts a war scene where the few people in the painting have their eyes wide open in a scary manner, then another painting at the wardrobe section is of a sad looking Balinese girl who stares off in the distance.... the last painting just on top of the toilet seat depicts a lady with a sidelong glance.. -.- So I had all the lights turned on when I sleep -.-

Papa took the other queen size bed room, exactly like mine but the pictures on his wall all like very zen one! Got one of a peaceful-looking Buddha, then another of a lotus flower.... How come!!! ; (

OK fast fast put a serene image to shoo the scary mental image out kekeke.

My beloved parents

I pwetty not!! LOL.

Breakfast at the villa. Typical breakfast like bacon, sausages, eggs done to your preference (sunny side up was my fave), the occasional char beehoon, char kuay teow or fried rice, fruits, pancakes, cereal, etc etc.

At 9:45am (by the way, the sun rises earlier here, around 6:30am, and sets earlier too, around 6pm), Dewa was already outside waiting for us and our first stop is back down south towards the airport to place order on some biscuits/pies called Pia Legong! Then Ubud afterwards! So excited!

My excitement was short lived, though. There was a massive traffic jam in Bali, if you can believe it. There were so many cars, so many motorbikes, traffic is slow moving, roads are small... it's really frustrating, not to mention, chaotic! Motorbikes zipping in and out, cars running the red light....lol. I think that was the only thing that marred our holidays... Took a looooong time to travel from one spot to another :(

So after 30minutes on a usual 10mins drive, placed our orders for the Pia Legong, then back up North again towards Ubud for another 2 hours on the road before lunch presents itself before us:

The ever popular Ibu Oka babi guling!

2 storeys high in all its babi guling serving glory.

Lol. Unflattering, like mother, like daughter :D

And this, I present to you, the famous babi guling! Lol. I certainly didn't expect babi guling to look like this at all hahaha. My expectation was almost like sio bak. Sio baks aside, this is definitely something special. Coming from Malaysia, where pork usually only makes an appearance in Chinese style cooking, it is certainly refreshing to have pork cooked in an almost Malay style.

Babi guling is stuffed with a mixture of spices and roasted over fire fueled by coconut husks, hence the coconut-y fragrance on the pork. The dark brown stuff by the meat is the crispy skin. We were unlucky as the crispy skin is all out, so this is one of the few crispy skin that we had! However the skin I had was a little bit hard but the thin layer of fat still stuck to the skin just melts... yum.

Oh by the way, fried pork skin is also on the menu LOL but we couldn't as pork skin is out.

Fried mixed vege which was too salty for my liking.

Nasi Babi Guling special LOL, which is like a happy set meal of sorts. Contains babi guling meat, gorengan, vegetable and also bits of roasted pork skin.

This is called Gorengan, probably the most sinful item ever. Care to make a guess?

Pork fat rolled in batter mixed with miscellaneous spices then deep fried.

The 'cabai' - was spicy, loved it!

Piping hot bowl of vegetable soup with pork meat - very wholesome, loved it! Has carrots, long beans, cabbage, onions, coriander leaves, and more that I can't tell from this shot alone :p

Indonesian Teh Botol. Initially tried this at Ayam Penyet Ria back in SG and didn't like it. I initally thought it's somewhat different in Indonesia probably, so decided to try it out, but nope, still tastes funky - has a bit of a 'kelena' aftertaste hahahahha. Weird I know, you got to try it to comprehend my point.

Babi guling lunch sets us back by IDR257,300 (could remember all the figures cos I still keep the receipts :P I was the treasurer, remember? LOL), which is around SGD30. Oh, in addition to that, we also bought a few packets of crispy prawn keropok for supper that night hehehehhehe. Washed down with icy cold Bintang beer ....

Anyways, as this is the first time I've tried babi guling, I can't tell whether it's good for a local's standards, but I certainly did enjoy the meal. If I ever had the chance to come back here again, I'd love to try another babi guling @ Warung Babi Guling Sanur, which I'd read in Travelfish to have the best babi guling in Bali ;)

Thank you little pigs for the lovely meal.

After that, it back on the van and a further hour of drive to Mount Batur.... On the way, Dewa dropped us off at this lovely place in Tegallalang where we were greeted by a refreshing burst of paddy terrace field green.

 Beautiful hor?

A really nice shot of MCC (cos got good photographer)

Nais cos model nais.

Finally a shot of Dewa!

On the way up to Mount Batur..... luck was not on our side. It started to drizzle, then rain, on and off!

Just like that, a thick mist blocked our view. It was really chilly up there at that point and the wind was strong.

Our miserable view :(

Dewa was also disappointed for us and he whipped out his phone to show us what the view should have looked like..... Sadly I can only imagine the magnificence ; ( The shot on his phone was probably the best view at that point hahahahha.

Sad right.... LOL. I was stubborn and wanted to give the mountain some time for the fog to clear off but 20minutes later, no change so... putus asa pfft.

On the way down, stalls of all sorts and sizes selling all sorts of fruits!

This is like something I used to paint during Art classes hehehe. Colours are so vibrant and beautiful!

Can't remember what this fruit is called but it tastes both sweet and sour.

Buah salak, sort of crunchy texture and mildly sweet. Got a bunch of these as well as some mangoes and mangosteens for our nightly supper @ our private villa lounge XD

Coffee plantation next! Still drizzling!! &*#$^##@$(%

Why your poop so expensive?!

Doing all the usual touristy stuff hehehe.

We were served with a range of drinks for tasting - free of charge!

Clockwise from 6oc: Ginseng coffee (my fave of the lot), chocolate coffee (sweet), Bali coffee (so-so), lemon tea, ginger tea (very refreshing), rosella tea, ginger coffee (strong ginger taste) and finally the one in the middle - coconut coffee (strong coconut taste lol).

And of course, luwak coffee is a must try on my list. At IDR50,000 @ SGD7, it's really cheap! Some cups go up to SGD50!

Very bitter! Strong flavours, but I suppose my expectations were high hehehhee it was really good anyways, but I think I'm a sweet coffee drinker :X

Wah, this post damn long.... almost there, and this is just Day 1!

Dinner in Ubud!

@ Bebek Joni, another place recommended by Dewa for ducks! It's just beside another rice paddy field where the ducks are grown.... Morning on lush greens, night on plates... ok. bad jokes aside, Bebek Joni does not disappoint!

MCC's fave lime squash. So. Very. Refreshing!

The Balinese style mushroom soup lol.

Fried crispy duck with Balinese spicy sauce. Was very yummy. I especially loved the condiment on the left, containing cencalok (I think), shallots, lime.... reminds me of the steamed ikan kembong Ah Ma used to make. As usual, Sien Ee & Mum & MCC were saying that it's really easy to make (roll eyes).

Ordered gado-gado again! Seems like every restaurant has their own rendition of gado-gado. Bebek Joni's gado-gado is a bit more elaborate, with more ingredients as compared to Warung Made's. Bebek Joni's has the additional tomatoes, cauliflowers, carrots, and mini corns. But don't get me wrong, the gado-gado is still pretty good! I think the secret lies in the peanut sauce. If the sauce is thick and great, whatever you mix it with will turn out delicious.

Deep fried snapper. Skin so crispy, insides so tender, dipped with the two condiments = 100% satisfaction heheheh I could totally write Bebek Joni their adverts :p

Traditional smoked duck. Cooked in a mixture of spices, some enjoyed it, but for me it was just salty.

Aiyoh Mum's peace sign... fail hehehehhe

And finally (it's 12am now, I seriously need to get to bed), our dessert of fried banana fritters with ice cream! Absolute yummers. Banana's thick and sweet, and they have a sort of gula Melaka to go with the dessert. Great combination... happy tummies hehehe. Seriously, there's something about the produce here, everything seems to be sweeter (bananas, mangosteen, mangoes) heck, even the lime tastes good! Maybe I'm still wearing rose tinted glasses hehehe...

Ok, coming up some temples, more greens and even more food!

Lam Mee: The Makings

Lam Mee cook guide!

I can only remember how to, roughly hehe. Nevertheless, end results still awesome. Loads of slicing and chopping and cutting though, there are just so many ingredients that add up to the lam mee.

Let's see if this poor memory of mine can make me proud :D Of course, expect lots of shortcuts from the other possibly lengthy recipes hehe.

What you shall need to make the most delish lam mee: (with very rough estimation)

Broth
400-500g small prawns
700-800g pork belly
6-7 pieces 'pee hu'
2L of chicken stock

Garnish
500g of crabmeat
2 handfuls of taugeh
1 handful of kuchai
1 handful of coriander
1 handful of spring onions
5 eggs
Chopped garlic (for frying)
Deep fried shallots

Yellow noodles
Sambal belachan (lime optional)

First, boil prawns in a pot of water - shells, heads and all - until cooked, remove prawns and next add in pork belly (whole piece) to the pot.

De-shell the prawns and keep them aside while retaining the heads of the prawns.Remove pork belly when cooked and transfer the prawn heads back into the pot. Add in chicken stock to the now prawn heads infested pot.

While all of that is going on, tail the bean sprouts, and cut kuchai into smaller one inch length. Chop coriander leaves and spring onions into smaller pieces for garnishing. Beat eggs and fry them into thin omelettes before rolling them and cutting them up in small, thin strips.

Liddis. Ok I just didn't roll them up here.

You can use whatever fancy crabmeats and de-shell those too but MCC has some cooked, pre-packed and frozen so all we had to do was to thaw them ;)

Back to the pot: Remove the prawn heads and throw in a few pieces of 'pee hu'. Flat fish literally. And no, I don't know if the fish has another name hehehehe but it's dried and should be sold in most supermarkets. Remove the pork belly too and cut them into smaller pieces.
Boil the kuchai and taugeh separately until cooked just nice that these retain a slight crunch and not overly soft. Separately, boil yellow noodles too.

Erh, now I'm stumped, making lam mee was a lot of work, but putting them all together into this DIY guide makes it all seem so easy!

Now comes the fun part! Lam mee arrangements!  Lay the bean sprouts and kuchais on the base of a bowl. Next on top would be the yellow noodles, followed by the pork belly, prawns and crabmeat. Garnish with coriander leaves, spring onions, red chillis (if any), omelette strips, fried chopped garlic and fried shallots. MUST be served with sambal belachan! Yummers.

 Ta-dah!

Looks nice riteeeeeeeeeee....

Lam mee was superb, thanks to MCC! Total preparation + cooking time is close to 3 hours! And that's with two people in the kitchen. But our work may have been hampered by the strong wind today.... our pots on stove took a really long time to boil because the fire on stove was heating something else sideways instead of the pot heheehhe but we didn't bother to close the windows cause the breeze is something we need!

Anyways, MCC tapao-ed some for me, can't wait to have them again for dinner tomorrow :D

Good Ol' Fish & Chips

After I'd moved to the Toa Payoh neighbourhood, many would exclaim that there's a lot of good food in Toa Payoh, etc etc. One of the places regularly mentioned as a Toa Payoh special is the fish and chips. As keen as I was to try it out, no one was able to give a proper address until one night I was watching TV, eating a sad meal of leftovers when a local food channel started rolling.

And whaddya know, the much talked about Toa Payoh fish and chips was one of the makan places featured! Fast as lightning jotted down the address, realized it's only about a stone's throw away!

Managed to drag MCC for lunch there one day. We reached at 11pm (was a Sunday) and there was already a line forming at the stall.

A corner stall in a coffeeshop, this fish and chips place is known for its good and authentic servings, at a fraction of the price.

The story of this humble stall is that, the owner used to work in a fish and chips restaurant when he was in the UK. Upon returning to Singapore, he opened a fish and chips place simply because he could not find a good and affordable meal of fish and chips.

A hearty splash of vinegar malt to go along with your fish and chips :D Besides fish and chips, other western delicacies are also served, namely chicken chop, pastas (looks pretty good, from the looks of the pasta that was served to the table beside us hehe). Oh and they also serve lamb shank and oxtail stew every alternate weekends, but apparently need to book in advance, or else they run out pretty quick!

The only soup on the menu - mushroom. I love the fact that the soup does not come out of a can. Delish! The garlic bread too, wholesome is the best word I can fit into the description.

By the way, the soup came after some 15 minutes of ordering. The wait is really, really long! And we were there early! Which I'm glad for at the very least. Our much anticipated plates of  good ol' fish and chips only arrive after 30 minutes of patience.

Quite a sad looking plate, really.... anyway both of us ordered the fish and chips, you can choose to have fish and rice, or fish and mashed taters and the likes but what for!! lol. Verdict!

I learnt that one way to distinguish a good deep fried batter is by how well the outer fried 'shell' retains its crispiness without leaving any of the inner batter mushy/undercooked. So I'm quite impressed by the thin crispiness of the batter with the inside dory fish completely soft and tender, yums :D

A tad greasy (which deep fried item isn't?) but overall delicious, with a big portion to boot. The only gripe we had was that there was no tartar sauce to go with the fish. Garggghhh!! Would have been ichiban! They do have plain mayonnaise though, after we'd requested for it.

Oh, and unlike the usual salad tossed in some mayonnaise and served on the side, Wok Inn prepares their salad with a vinaigrette dressing and roughly chopped garlic - love them to bits! All this for $5.80 only! Awesome.

Pigs Inside Out @ JB

More shots on a JB day trip! I'm really happy with the pictures that the S100 is taking. It's so user-friendly, it's almost a no-brainer. Me, I'm just really happy with a lightweight camera that captures good pictures, fuss-free.

See for yourself the pictures and let me know what you think!

Bee Hua was nice enough to pick us up at the JB checkpoint and whisked us off for lunch!

Now, kway chap is a popular southern Malaysia dish. I thought I won't like kway chap due to a past experience of finding it too sticky and starchy - sort of associating it with lor mee, but I must say that I'm much of a convert now! :D

Located some 30 minutes drive from the city centre, this double-shoplots restaurant sells kway chap and from the signboard, has been featured on the popular local food TV series of 8TV Ho Chak.

Kway chap ingredients are displayed for 'preview' and you pick the ones you want in a bowl - like yong tau foo. Here I asked Kenneth to load on the vegs and after he's filled the bowl with chai sim and romaine lettuce, the staff said the vegs are for display only -.-

Everyone was feeling ravenous and thus greed got the better of us. We had to try absolutely every freaking item displayed!!

Can you say lau nua??! Chunky pieces of pig stomach and intestines, braised lor eggs, tofu. liver, etc, etc. This place is so non-halal that every Muslim must stay away at least 50m from this restaurant!

All sorts of fried stuff - Not really keen on this section, though I have my eyes set on the Taiwanese sausage yum yum.

Don't know why we didn't take this - I think it's duck, could be chicken. Maybe cos it's not in line with the kway chap principle of all things pork? Colours look a bit patchy cos I used a poster mode.

A relatively short wait later...

Took the food shots using super vivid mode.

Braised chicken feet - The flavours of the herb was too strong for me and I didn't quite enjoy it. Maybe because I'm so accustomed to the milder northern way?

 Tofu and eggs

This shot is bad..... it looks like the poster mode, but I guess the contrast setting is high with the super vivid. Anyways, one shot out of twenty ain't bad at all.

Pig stomach is very tender, missing my tu tor th'ng very much now!

I quite like this shot! Though I'm not in it :( Colours are really nice and vibrant.

The kway teow is thin and slippery, but good! Broth is more diluted than the 'lor' type - something I'm quite thankful for.

Behold the magic five hungry people can conjure -

 Now you see.....

Now you DON'T! Super clean can?! Hehehehe... Initially when the plates are served one by one on the table, we honestly thought that there is absolutely too many things we've ordered, but as it turns out, it was still manageable (cos we have that duo bui Kenneth)

Washed down the uric-acid filled meal with this very refreshing lemon honey jelly ice. Don't you just love Malaysia ;) Oh- the kway chap meal is quite pricey for local standards. I can't remember exactly how much it was, but it's approximately SGD5 per person, meaning the total bill is at least RM60! Still, worth a second and subsequent visit ;)

A Choc Apple Cake A Day

Q: What do you get when you put two food-loving cousins who are bored on a weekend?
A: A baking experiment!

Well it goes like this actually... MCC asked if I wanted to go cycling at Pulau Ubin and I asked her if she wants to bake a cake... so we sort of did each other a favour I suppose hehehe. MCC collected like, more than 10 types of cake recipes, ranging from the sinful marble butter cake to the mouth-watering molten lava cake. I first suggested chocolate cake and MCC said no, no, why not a walnut cake which then evolved to a walnut chocolate cake with banana and since I've tried banana, chocolate and peanut butter cake, and kinda like it, so naturally I pitch in the idea of a chocolate walnut banana peanut butter cake...... Phew.... Even saying it makes me full already.

So, putting aside all OTT ideas, we settled on this recipe with a seemingly easy-to-make approach... it's a Chocolate Apple Dream Cake! LOL! No, I didn't make up the name hehehhe.

I can't recall the detailed recipe, but from what I can gather from bits and pieces of the pictures I took (with  my new camera!!), including pathetic recollection of my mediocre memory, this is what I can get.

(A)
150g brown sugar
180g butter

(B)
3 eggs

(C)
300g flour
2 tbsp cocoa powder
2 tsp double action baking powder
1 tsp sodium bicarbonate

(D)
150ml milk
50g chocolate

(E)
60g apple
1tsp cinnamon powder

1. Whisk (A) until soft. Then add in (B)
2. Once (A) and (B) is well mixed, add in (C) and (D) alternately. Mix until combination is soft and fluffy.
3. Slice apple and cook over stove with cinnamon powder until tender. Leave aside to cool before use.
4. Mix (E) to the mixture and pour over greased tin foil.
5. Steam cake for 50 minutes.

If you are going to try to re-enact the recipe above, by all means please do so but just in case, disclaimer attached :D

My favourite rose wine!! MCC told me not to tell IKK that we've already started drinking early during the day...

The new cam is super shiok, got a lot of features and scene modes like these toy camera mode which is really the pinhole effect.

The recipe calls for the cake to be steamed. But when we tried fitting the tin pan into the wok for steaming, it doesn't fit! So we used the oven-steaming way... lol.

Just before the cooking process. Was a lot liquidy than expected.

And voila!

With a giant crack cutting through the cake! Hehehehhe. Used the cake tester and realized it's not cook enough around the center, so popped it into the oven again -.- I told MCC just leave the insides undercooked so it becomes a little like molten chocolate cake heheheheh and she jeling at me :D

Tried the cake, it really is not bad leh! I know the combination of apple and chocolate just doesn't seem to cut it, but I think the cinnamon powder with the apple is just a great pairing, even with chocolate!

Looks almost same same hor?! Kakakakka... The cake in the photo looks fluffy but the ones I reap from the under-performing oven was slightly moister lol - not a bad thing really!

Operation Chocolate Apple Dream cake iz suksess!!

Jing Hua Dumpling

Su En's always telling me about the many fab food in Chinatown and I pestered her to bring me other than the Szechuan one (don't get me wrong, I still love the food there).

We call it the dumpling place initially, both being bananas and not knowing what the restaurant is called in Chinese but upon checking the receipt, they do have romanized name - Jing Hua lol...

This Jing Hua aka dumpling place is about 10-15 minutes walk from the Chinatown MRT. By the way, it was a blazingly hot day and I recall heading back after the meal with a major headache due to the heat.

I love this type of old colonial shophouses.

Minced Pork Noodle with Soya Bean Paste

At $5, this is a simple and yet satisfying meal! The restaurant only offers a few types of dishes. Good and bad, but more good, for me at least - I am always indecisive when there is a whole range of food available, you know, inch-thick menus... so if the options are narrowed down, it does make my life a lot easier!

Garnished with julienned cucumber and bean sprouts, this bowl of noodle is best taken with a bit of chilli :D

This order was sort of a mistake -.- I had mistakenly thought it's a bean sprouts noodle dish but it turns out to be Bean Sprouts with Minced Pork and Soya Bean Paste.... no mention of noodle there... LOL. At $8, it's totally not worth the money. Su En kept nagging me about it, said she can make the same thing at a fraction of the price kekekekeke. In my defense, the taugeh is really juicy -.-

Xiao Long Bao! The smallest order comes in a set of 7, at $7. These are good, in my opinion. The xiao long bao skin is not overly thick nor floury - just the right thickness to hold in the soup without tearing. Really enjoyable. Succulent meaty core with sliced ginger and vinegar complementing it nicely.

Sadly, on contrary to the post title, we did not order any dumplings (smallest serving is about 10 pcs, can you believe it). But still, worth to come back and try the others. This time I shall read the menu carefully and refrain from ordering bean sprouts :(

Jing Hua has other interesting dishes I would love to try out, specifically Chinese Pizza (wonder that will be like), the dumplings of course and the dessert!

Finally a shot taken with instagram filters of this cool view... a temple set against the modern skyscrapers of the Central Business District.

Minestrone

Was in the mood to make something simple and yet nutritious on a weekend and minestrone comes to mind. Googled the recipe, thought to myself that I will leave out the extravagant ingredients (vegetable stock/ red wine/ cannellini beans).

Bought small portions of carrots, leeks, celery, tomatoes... They look like small but you will be surprised at how much they seem to multiply once chopped into tiny pieces -.-

Chopping time ~ 30mins? Though someone else can probably finish in 15m.

It's so simple you can do it with your eyes closed! And minestrone is basically very flexible. You just have to be sure that the essential ingredients are there to actually qualify your soup as minestrone!

Heat olive oil in pan and fry chopped garlic and onions until fragrant. Then add in all the cut vegetables. Cook for 3-5 minutes before adding in tomato purée, water, macaroni and oregano herbs. Just let it simmer till macaroni is cooked and carrots are soft! Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Serve with a sprinkle of grated parmesan cheese and toast. Cukup d! :D

The Georgian Adventure - Hike to Chalaadi Glacier

Our third, and last hike in Svaneti. There are so many more places to hike and explore around Georgia, it was a hard decision to premature...
