Oriole Coffee

One of my all-time favourite places for coffee, lazy brunches and even dessert! Located a stone's throw away from Somerset, with a strategic placing for al fresco dining - you can people watch, but not uncomfortably the other way round ;)

One of my default orders - flat white.

All day brunch - English breakfast consisting of sunny side up eggs with toast, sausages, bacon and mushroom. Extremely filling!

Parma ham with rocket on toast with scrambled eggs. Rockets are probably one of the very small group of veg that I don't take :\

Super mega huge extravaganza brunch of ham, slab of steak, sausages, mushrooms, eggs and potato wedges. Only for the guys. Or an extremely hungry female with worms in tummy.

Pear salad with sun-dried tomatoes, rocket, romaine lettuce, chopped walnuts with some unidentified cheese. My guess is mascarporne lah. Iz sedap.

Soup of the day - potato and leek soup. Double thumbs up! This shot is pretty crappy la, but seriously love the soup. Initially thought the brown stuff in it was truffle hehehe but of course the idea was dismissed as fast as it appeared. They are in fact roasted thinly sliced potatoes. Seriously yummy!

Baked salmon with potato wedges and some pineapple side. I'm a raw salmon lover, I find that cooking salmon kinda ruins it hehehe but I must say Oriole is doing it great - salmon is still succulent and soft nomnomnom. And that pineapple sort of sauce goes so well with the salmon.

Chicken confit served on a bed of mashed taters and mushroom sauce. The chicken leg was a tad too salty for me (but I supposed that's the purpose of confits). Though I particularly enjoyed the oh-so-fluffy mash.

I can find no fault with every Oriole coffee I've ordered thus far. This was a mocha latte :D

Apple strudel with warm vanilla sauce and vanilla ice-cream. (Menu: traditional bavarian, phyla wrapped apple-raisins strudel, warm vanilla sauce)

Wah, I tell you, this has got to be one of my favourites by Oriole. Fine layers of pastry puff nesting the sweetest diced apples cooked in cinnamon and vanilla.... absolutely decadent. Oh! And the combination of the warm vanilla sauce with the strudel against the cold ice-cream is soooooooo oomph *melt (literally).

Dean & DeLuca Coffee

In an effort to rid of all negative vibes in this blog, I shall write about meaningless mediocre happenings :P

I'm always game for a good cuppa; I love coffee! No longer out of necessity though (well, applicable sometimes only -.-)

A good friend recommended Dean & Deluca, a sort of atas gourmet cafe, where all day breakfast and desserts are served. So a couple of friends decided to grab a bite before heading for a movie (I think it was Brave, that Pixar cartoon. The short story La Luna was awesome).

Nobody greets you at the entrance, you just pick your seat and park your butt yourself, then shuffle over to the counter to order and pay for your food.

Coffee ranges from $4-8 I think. I ordered a flat white myself. And they only serve them in take-away cups. Why??? That's a lot of waste going on there....

Their bread and pastries are pretty good! We ordered this cinnamon almond bread thingie with caramel on top which is quite good. Well, I have a sweet tooth... so....

Apple pie! Goodness! I've never been one to fancy apple pie but this is an exception.

I'm a hugeee fan of carrot cakes! Even now every time we pop into a cafe, bunch of friends will ask if I want carrot cake lol -.- D&D carrot cakes are average only, not that great, but at a whopping $7. But I guess that's the kind of price you pay dining at places like these. Just a thin slice nia, not really worth the value lah.

K that's all, Dean & Deluca quite shiok, if got nothing better to do, can go there drink kopi n eat cakes.

Sudden end of post :D

Cooking Up a Storm

'Collected' TY at the airport (Air Asia is surprisingly early, their services are really getting better and better), and TY was already waiting for more than 30mins when I arrived lol. Next morning got up early for breakfast nearby before heading off to permanently have skin poked and dyed.

My favourite butterfly bun!

The whole tattooing progress took about 4 hours to complete. Pity that guy. But it's really no joke, the pain I mean... But I assure you, the end result will make you feel like the whole trouble's the worth... until you get the next patch of skin inked.... The whole vicious cycle.

Afterwards dragged TY to a tea place which I've always seen, but never got the chance to try. TWG! They've got about a zillion selection of tea from all over the world...

A very atas sort of place... sparkling silverwares, shiny gold plated teapots, immaculately dressed patrons with flawless makeup and toting expensive handbags, prim and proper table manners... LOL! Whereas in direct contrast, both TY and I trudged in, with shorts, tie-dyed top, slippers and all kekekekke.

One macaron is about $2. They all have fancy names which I obviously cannot recall but one is some sort like passion fruit and the other sort of tea-ish blend lol yes I'm hopeless here... After ordering our macarons, I asked the attentive waiter for a tea recommendation (omg, digressing, the waiters at TWG are well-dressed, clean-cut and one in particular, really cute! Hiks.... ok back to main topic...) and he said since TWG's macarons are sour, he recommended a sweet, floral tea with a fancy sounding name (Silk White Tea).

I thought they will serve us individual cups of tea, and yes they did..... in addition to serving individual pots! Lol... That's about equivalent to 5 cups of tea I think. Both of us lim teh ka pa kekekeke.

Apple pie with ice cream. The fine layers of I-don't-know-what-you-call-it, crepes(?) adds up to a rich sweet combo.

Those tins on the left side are just *some* of the many, many tea tins TWG has, and the whole pillar revolves!

The very nice shot that I took ;) Some of us are born with it...

We were seated just next to another pillar filled with decoratives.... check out the thin layer of dust!

The macaron shot I got cos I was pretty lucky! lol. After finishing our tea, on the way out and I raised my cam to take this shot but the lady behind the display held up her palm to stop me, only to be saved by another waiter who said it's ok :P Yes I am grateful for the kind-and-non-assuming face that God has given me LOL.

Anyway bill came to about $40+. Steep for just tea for two, an apple pie and a couple of macarons. I jokingly told him to tell his pop that we went for tea that costs us RM100+ LOL.

Sort of as a show of gratitude, we told MCC that both of us will mess up the kitchen and cook dinner for the night! So after almost a full day out shopping for ingredients and miscellaneous items, when we hit home, it was already 4pm!

Scramble, scramble to task - TY settles the cake while I busy myself with the asam belai. We hitched the carrot cake recipe off Nigella Lawson's site LOL, though the cake does call for some fancy ingredients, but this being Singapore, we could gather all the ingredients easily. Also, I was putting my trust on the curvy Nigella to have simplified the processes to the carrot cake!

 Ingredients:

Carrot Cake:
1/2 cup regular olive oil, not extra virgin, plus more for oiling pan
3 tablespoons pine nuts (we substituted these for chopped almonds, walnuts and macadamia nuts cos pine nuts are really pricey and we thought it's not worth the price)
2 medium carrots, grated (about 2 cups)
1/2 cup golden sultanas
1/4 cup rum
3/4 cup superfine sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 eggs
2 1/2 cups almond meal / flour
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 lemon, zest finely grated and juiced

Mascarpone cream, optional
1 cup mascarpone
2 teaspoons confectioners'sugar
2 tablespoons rum
1 (9-inch) springform or other round cake tin

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line the base of the springform pan with a nonstick silicone liner or baking parchment. Grease the sides with olive oil. Add the pine nuts to a small dry pan and toast them over low heat.

Grate the carrots in a food processor or with a coarse grater, and put them on a double layer of kitchen towels. Wraps the towels around the carrots to soak up the excess liquid.

Put the sultanas in a small saucepan with the rum, and bring to the boil over medium heat. Lower the heat and simmer for 3 minutes.

Whisk the sugar and 1/2 cup of oil in a stand mixer or by hand, until creamily and airily mixed together.

Whisk in the vanilla and eggs in a large bowl. Fold in the ground almonds, nutmeg, grated carrots, golden sultanas (and any rum that clings to them) and finally the lemon zest and lemon juice.

Scrape the mixture into the prepared cake tin and smooth the surface with a rubber spatula. The batter will be very shallow in the tin.

Sprinkle with the pine nuts and bake until the top is risen and golden and a cake tester comes out sticky but otherwise more or less clean, about 30-40 minutes.

Remove the cake from the oven and let it sit on a rack for 10 minutes before removing the sides. Let cool until ready to serve. Transfer the cake to a serving platter.

Combine the mascarpone, confectioners' sugar and rum in a small bowl. Slice the cake and serve with the mascarpone cream.

The whole time that TY was busy over the cake, I fussed over the asam belai which was at one point either not salty enough or too sour! Pengsan... lol.

So..... after 4 hours slaving in the kitchen, I present you the final outcome! Jeng jeng jeng!

Stir fried snap peas with sliced carrots and oyster mushrooms.

My favourite! Steamed stuffed red chillis with minced pork and bittergourd. Sooo goood.

Le assam belai. Followed the recipe book so did not get any pineapples or cucumber like how Ah Ma used to make. Other than the paste blended a tad too coarse, it was pretty good, cos MCC helped with the seasoning kekekekke.

The very yummy tau eu bak that has been braised close to 40 minutes, maybe more! Meat is reasonably tender, with a very rich and caramelised gravy. Looking back at this shot, it looks like it has sesame seed sprinkled all over, but it's not. That's just the sheen of the tau eu.... Looks pretty good eh, but the sesame seed is a bit of an inspiration, would be nice too if added I think.

Stir fried sawi that requires no over the top description. What you see is what you get.

 The whole yummy spread.

GONE IN 20 MINUTES!
LOL...

And then finally the cake....

The end product! It's quite a shame that the top is slightly darkened (aka burnt) but only ever so slightly. But otherwise it still tastes good nevertheless! Some parts of the cake is a bit moist at the center. Probably the springform pan is a bit too deep, that's why the top is burnt but slightly undercooked in the center. Love it to bits though ;)

A Gastronomic Adventure

If you are susceptible to scavenging hunger while viewing saliva-inducing shots, then you're in big trouble. Don't say I didn't warn ya, leave while you still can! Because I had the same problems while editing the photos and posting this T__T

After my rave reviews on ilLido, I managed to persuade TY to have dinner here on his recent trip. And most fortunately, this time around I had a higher tech black box device to capture still images hehehe.

We arrived at 8pm and since it was a public holiday, I actually thought the place would be full, but no, only one other table was occupied.

Service was attentive again, as usual. We were served with the fluffiest  piece of focaccia bread with oil-and-vinegar dip. We started with rose wine, which is something I tried for the first time and I love this golden pink liquid! It's very fruity and light, very pleasant to sip.

Our complimentary amuse bouche of tuna with caviar sitting on a thinly sliced zucchini. Barely a mouthful but flavours already packed a punch. Both of us were already tingling with gastronomic excitement!

Just savour your eyes on these lovely platter of appetizers! If the presentations were of any indication on the delicious factor, then this is just enough to tell me that I will be in good hands....

Left: Fegato d’Oca e Galantina d’Anitra - Pan Fried Goose Liver with Duck Terrine and Wild Berries - 59. Duck terrine weren't exactly my thing, but I think TY likes 'em. Oooooh the goose liver! Where do I even start! Just pure fat (and here I am consoling myself that it is not the politically incorrect foie gras) and it literally melts in your mouth, it's sinfully blissful.... It's the type of food where you close your eyes as you let your tongue absorb in all the flavours and moan in satisfaction. Score!

Right: Pan Roasted Scallops with Cannelini Beans, Carrot Jus and Bottarga  - 52. Cannelini beans for me, no matter how fancy the name may sound, tastes just like baked beans! :S But that wasn't an issue as the thick, fat scallops distracts you with its freshness ... sigh. But I still find the combination of pan roasted scallops with puréed carrot a little unsettling. Ah well.

I love dining here. The intervals between each course is comfortably long and you get to lapse into long-winded conversations at your own pace. LOL.

Anyways TY was taking shots with his bulky DSLR and this nosy patron on a neighbouring table prodded us about it. He apparently thought that we're working for a magazine or something lol.

My initial visit to ilLido, I ordered a non-Italian main course, the duck confit (because it was on the lunch set menu lol). So this time I was determined to try the pastas, which they are known for.

Left: ‘Carnaroli’ Risotto with Crayfish 59. Ehhhhh.... Crayfish was so-so but I liked how the risotto turned out. TY reckons it's a bit too salty to his liking though.

Right: Fettuccine with Roast Veal and Porcini Mushrooms 55. Generous portions of mushroom and fettucine cooked al dente! Veal was tender but I find the whole dish somewhat overwhelming, in a jelak kinda way. TY liked the fettucine over the risotto though lol.

Ahhh... desserts!

Molten Lava Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice-cream 32. Mother of all desserts! Thick, hot gooey chocolate mess flowing out of the cake. One big mouthful of the cake drenched in the chocolate sauce, along with a dollop of contrasting cold vanilla ice-cream is a surefire way to send you through the tunnel of paradise... I really should stop trying to describe this heavenly dessert T_T

The molten lava cake is going to be a tough act to follow. TY's Crème Brule Symphony with Vanilla, Strawberry, Coffee and Pistachio 29 . As expected, it was bah after the molten lava :p But over the four flavours, I liked the vanilla one best.

Don't even ask how much the whole meal costs. It was a record high for the both of us lol. We told ourselves it was a once-in-a-while sort to console ourselves kekeke. Oh, they have another branch in Singapore too! And I'll bet the one in Singapore is absolutely NOT pork free. Ok set :D

The Georgian Adventure - Hike to Chalaadi Glacier

Our third, and last hike in Svaneti. There are so many more places to hike and explore around Georgia, it was a hard decision to premature...
